Changing Career Tips

Why People Change

A career change has its challenges of course because it may mean leaving behind a stable job with benefits and security. However, if you are looking to make a change, there are many reasons why it may be worth considering.

For example, you could want to switch jobs so that you have more control over your work schedule, maybe your values have changed and you are no longer passionate about that field or you are feeling up for a new challenge and even just better pay.

If you're thinking about changing your career path, consider what you want to do and what job would make you happy. This will help you identify career opportunities that suit your strengths and weaknesses.

6 tips for a successful career change

We have put together some tips we have learned along the way to help make your journey into a new career that bit smoother.

1. Self-Assessment

Ask yourself, what is not working for you and be clear about what the problem is. You also want to evaluate what you like about your job, this is just as valuable.

It is important to take the time out and to answer these questions honestly. Every job has its up and downs so try not to jump to conclusions when there is a lull in work.

Try to be as specific as possible. Is it your co-workers, your boss, or maybe the place as a whole? When you have exhausted all options, then it is time to take out your cv.

2. Do your Research

Would you like to stay in the same industry or try something completely out of your field? Does it line with your values? Maybe it was something you have always wanted to do but never felt confident enough.

No matter the reason, begin by creating a roadmap. Most people are afraid of the unknown, and while making a career change you’ll likely to feel anxious and overwhelmed but looking at it as a long-term project can help you manage the steps you need to take, bit by bit.

3. Be Realistic

Don’t leave your current role as soon as you are feeling a change. Make sure to be somewhat financially stable to buy yourself time. Chances are that when you do start over, it may be a lower salary from your present position.

4. Make connections and gain experiences

Whichever field you choose, you must figure out how to cross that bridge into a new career. Will you do an internship? Volunteer? Will you work part-time?

Whether it is the same industry or a new one, reach out to people in roles that may interest you, and have a list of questions to ask them about their work environment, challenges, and how they spend their working days. If possible, maybe even shadow someone to get a feel for the role.

Using platforms such as LinkedIn can help you to connect with people and see from their experience how they got to where they are today.

Also, don’t be afraid to use those connections you may already have. There is a lot of power through word-of-mouth.

5. Consider Educational Resources and Develop new skills

If are moving into something that requires a new set of skills or certain degree or certifications, check out online courses, college courses or part-time classes to bring you up to speed. This can also help to deepen your understanding of your new potential career.

For example at Accounting Technicians Ireland, we offer online courses, that give you a chance to study from home, and at your own pace.
